SASA Winter League 2011 / 2012

posted 7 Oct 2011 00:37 by Matt Williams   [ updated 7 Oct 2011 01:17 ]

SASA will be running the usual Winter League series of races at Southampton, once a month from November to February.  Please see the SASA website for details www.skisasa.co.uk

The SASA Winter League is a fun event for individuals (not as part of a school team) and is a great way to gain experience of competitive skiing in a friendly and informal context.  I strongly recommend it to all PGS skiiers as a way to progress their skiing over the Winter months, both for those that are already active in school skiing, but also for anyone who hasn't managed to get started this year, but would now like to.

The Cat I Mixed team failed to get the required number of times recorded in Run 2 to post a team aggregate and will therefore not progress any further this year, however, all of these children were competing in this event for the first time and should be very proud of their performance - a great learning experience for future years.

The Cat IV Boys team were up against some very strong competition in their age group and unfortunately, despite fine individual performances all round, will not be progresssing any further this year.

It's hard to pick out any individual performances, but special congratulations to Anna and Patrick Caldwell, both of whom were "skiing up" in older age group teams and performed very well.  Many thanks also to Louisa Palmer, who is unable to take up her place in the finals at Stoke due to other school sporting committments, we thank her for her contribution to the qualifying event.

Availability allowing, we generally try as best we can to take the same team that qualified through to the Age Group Finals.  The teams going to Stoke for Saturday 8th October will therefore be:

Girls Team Cat II (Yr 7 / 8)
Cameron Manson (8)
Nadine Hugecova (5)
Anna Caldwell (4)
Nicole Hugecova (7)

Boys Team Cat III (Yr 9 / 10)
Sam Williams (10)
Al Harding (10)
Rowan Dixon (10)
Ben Jackson (10)

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Based on the performances at the Southampton Qualifier, PGS has also been invited to send a Girls and a Boys team to the English Schools Open Championship on Sunday 9th October.  There are no age categories applied, so for this event we form teams based on the fastest individual times recorded in the Regional Qualifier across all age groups, as follows:

Girls Open Team
Cameron Manson
Nadine Hugecova
Anna Caldwell
Nicole Hugecova

Boys Open Team
Selection was extremely competitive for the Boys Open team this year, with less than 0.08 of a second separating the best individual run times of three boys (Harry Staley, Rowan Dixon and Ed Harding) vying for the final place in the team of four.  Harry Staley gets the place by virtue of his best individual time of 12.36.  The team is therefore:

Sam Williams
Al Harding
Seth Jackson
Harry Staley

Harry was a great supporter of the Open team last year, when he acted as travelling reserve and as a forerunner, so I know Rowan and Ed will both wish Harry the best of luck.

Finally.....
Commiserations to all the skiiers who have not got to the finals this year; those whose journey ended at the SASA Interschools competition in May and those who made it through to the ESSKIA Regional Qualifier.  Thank you very much for your support throughout the year.

Regards,
Matt Williams

Notes:
1.  The teams representing PGS at the ESSKIA Regional Qualifier were selected back in May, based on the best individual times recorded at the SASA Interschools Competition.  The selection guidelines that were applied were:
a. To give selection priority to children in order of times recorded (by age group and gender) to form teams that are competitive and have a chance of qualifying for the ESSKIA Age Group and Open Championship events.
b. To place children within the correct age group teams as far as possible.
d. To enable as many children as possible (within the ESSKIA limits) to participate in the regional qualifier.  This sometimes requires the mixing of different age categories to make up a team - in this case the team has to ski in the age category of the oldest child in the team.
e. To ensure that children with a chance of ESSKIA squad selection participate.

2.  ESSKIA Qualifying and National Competitions are team events and have no individual awards.  Team results are based on two separate runs and are calculated on the aggregate of the best three individual times from Run 1 and the best three individual times from Run 2.

SASA Interschools Challenge 2011

posted 18 May 2011 11:57 by Matt Williams   [ updated 18 May 2011 23:08 ]

This year's event at Southampton Alpine Centre was full to capacity, with 88 competitors from 17 school teams competing.  Portsmouth Grammar made another strong showing with a record number of 21 PGS pupils participating.  Once again the PGS skiers performed exceptionally well with another great team result for the school and fine individual performances.

Full results are published on the SASA website at www.skisasa.co.uk

Team Results

2011 saw a reversal of last year's result with a win for PGS Seniors and runners up place for PGS Juniors as follows:

Primary Schools

1.         Otterbourne Primary       39.66

2.         PGS Junior School        46.67

3.         West Hill Park School    50.46

The Junior school team did exceptionally well to finish runners up against a very strong Otterbourne Primary team.  None of the PGS junior school team had competed in this event before; many congratulations to all team members for an excellent first-time performance.

Secondary Schools

1.    PGS Senior School             34.31

2.    Romsey School                  35.31

3.    Thornden School                 39.36

A win for the Senior School team in a very close contest against last year’s winners, with some great individual performances securing victory over a very strong Romsey by a margin of one second.

Individual Results

There were some excellent individual performances with PGS featuring strongly in the podium places as follows:

SASA Interschools ski Challenge 2011

posted 14 Mar 2011 23:54 by Matt Williams   [ updated 16 Mar 2011 13:54 ]

Entries for the 2011 SASA Interschools Ski Challenge on Tuesday 17th May at Southampton Alpine Centre are now open, the Event Poster and Entry Form are attached for information

Could you please advise me as soon as possible if your child would be interested in representing Portsmouth Grammar in this interschools ski team event?

The school member of staff in charge of skiing (Mrs Staley) will be coordinating our team entries this year so please do not send any entries direct to SASA..

We will be entering separate senior and junior school teams and hope that as many children as possible will be able to compete but, if there are restrictions on numbers, we may have to limit our entry.  If we have to do this we will select on past form, training experience and known skiing activity.  Participation will require some time off school on the afternoon of the event, permission for which Mrs Staley will arrange with the school for the entire group.  Please do not ask for permission individually.

Competitors must be able to safety negotiate the Southampton Dry Slope start ramp and a slalom course, in control, without help; so some recent training or past experience will be needed.  If you are in any doubt please contact me or Mrs Staley for advice.

I anticipate that the school will be able to provide transport to the slope only; collection from the ski slope afterwards will have to be arranged by parents.

I would be grateful if you could reply to me by email as soon as possible, also copied to Mrs Staley (l.staley@pgs.org.uk) and no later than Monday 28 March 2011, with a firm indication of interest.  Once we have established numbers we will provide further information.

A report on last year’s event is available here:  http://www.pgsski.org.uk/news/sasainterschools2010results

Current reponses are shown in an Availability Tracker

Entries for the SASA Winter League at Southampton Alpine Centre are now open at:

http://www.skisasa.co.uk/sasa-race-events/winter-league-2010-2011

I would recommend this series as a part of the winter training programme.  There are normally about five or six timed runs in each event these are therefore a great training opportunity and a way of getting together and measuring progress throughout the winter.

Skiers of all ages are welcome, so if any parents fancy having a go they would also be welcome.  The events are suitable for any skier who can get down the main slope in control.

Matt
